Donna Ingemanson Interview

“For me, art is not just a career-it's a lifestyle.”

We are very fortunate to have Donna Ingemanson in our family of artists and are thrilled to feature her as February’s Artist of the Month! Her warm and friendly style covers everything from animals and cute bugs to sports and world travel. We had a chance to catch up with her recently to learn a little bit more about what makes her tick. Here’s what she had to say:

GreenBox: Did you always know you wanted to be an artist?

Donna Ingemanson: As a child, my mom always told me that I’d be an artist but I actually started off studying to be a veterinarian. Then one day, I was in my dorm while some friends of mine were drawing and I thought to myself “I could do that!” So I did, and from there I switched my major to art!

GB: Tell us about your style?

DI: It’s hard to pigeon hole it, but I would say that it’s personal to who I am.

GB: Do you have set times for creating art or do you let it happen randomly?

DI: I have a schedule where I create on Mondays. Typically, I paint about 4-5 pieces a day. It is an unpredictable process though and I’ve learned that you have to let go of what you think it should be and just let it flow.

GB:  What message or feeling are you trying to communicate with your art?

DI: Depends on the day :)

GB:  What do you like to do in your spare time?

DI: I organize the local farmers market in my town and I like to spend time in my tiny garden. It’s where I go to free my mind!

GB:  What artists do you look up to?

DI: The artists that inspire me are Cy Twombley, Wayne White, Paul Klee, Pierre Bonnard and all the unsung artists who stick with their responsibility to create art.

GB: Which creative medium would you love to pursue but haven’t yet?

DI: Music and photography but there’s never enough time in the day!

GB: What’s your favorite music these days?

DI: Hawaiian music

GB: What superpower would you have and why?

DI: I’d like to be able to fly and also to stop time to allow for more creative practices!

GB: What’s the best piece of advice you’ve been given?

DI: Follow your own vision.

GB: Lastly, any words of advice for aspiring designers/artists?

DI: For me art is not just a career-it's a lifestyle. Being a visual addict has helped. Also, I always think of the advice that Ted Turner gave to his kids: 'Early to bed - early to rise - work like hell - and advertise.'
