It's Groundhog Day!

February 2 is Groundhog Day!

Every year in a town called Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, a groundhog named Punxsutawney Phil lets the whole country know how much longer our winter will last. Here's how it works:

The little critter emerges from a tree trunk (it's a specially made one just for the holiday) on the morning of February 2. There are hundreds of reporters and photographers there to greet him! If Phil sees his shadow, we will have six more weeks of winter. If he doesn't see his shadow, we will have an early spring.

Here are some fun facts to celebrate Groundhog Day:

  • According to legend, Punxsutawney Phil gets a sip of special juice every year that gives him 7 more years of life.
  • Groundhog Day falls right between the winter solstice and spring equinox. Some people believe that sunny skies on that day mean that the rest of winter will be cold and cloudy. So if Phil can see his shadow on that day, the idea goes, winter will be yucky for the next six weeks.
  • Groundhog Day has been celebrated since 1887.
  • Here's an interesting chart that shows how well Phil has been able to predict the weather!

What do you think will happen on Tuesday, February 2? Will Phil see his shadow? We can't wait to find out.
