Apple Art and Crafts

September 30, 2016 / Crafts

Apple art is a fun way to celebrate autumn. Did you know that September 17 is National Eat an Apple Day? And September 26 is Johnny Appleseed Day. With all the apple-themed celebrations in the next few days, we wanted to share some ideas of things to do with apples (and apple-themed treats!).

And of course, since art for kids is what we’re all about, we have some apple art to share with you, too.

Apple Prints: To make these, you’ll need 2 apples, poster paint, and paper plates. Cut the apples in half. Cut one top to bottom (vertically) and the other side to side (horizontally). That way, you’ll get two different shapes! Put the paint on the paper plates and dip the cut side of the apple in. Then stamp away! This makes terrific wrapping paper.

Apple “Donuts”: These clever treats require a few apples, cream cheese, food coloring, and sprinkles. Slice the apples horizontally to make circles. Core each slice with a knife or a pastry tip. Mix cream cheese with food coloring, frost the apple slice, and add sprinkles! This works with peanut butter, too.

Apple-Shaped Cupcakes: You’ll find this one on our Pinterest page. It’s so easy! When you pour cupcake batter into the paper liner, just put a triangle of tinfoil at the top to create an apple shape while it bakes. Once cool, use a green leaf candy (or cut a green gumdrop) and a pretzel stick to create the stem and leaf. Frost with red frosting, and there you have it. Yum!

And now for our favorite part: the art! We have bright and cheery apple art for kids’ rooms, starting of course with Eric Carle‘s apple from the beloved The Very Hungry Caterpillar book. We also have Jen Christopher’s Hoots Hungry, Stacy Amoo-Mensah’s Apple of my Eye, and many more.
