St. Patrick’s Day (& Pi Day)!

March 11, 2016 / Crafts, Holidays

This week has two terrific holidays to celebrate: Pi Day and St. Patrick’s Day!

What’s Pi Day? Pi is a math value that has to do with the size of a circle. It’s a very, very long number (some say it’s endless!), but the first three digits of it are 3.14. March is the third month, and so Pi Day is a fun day celebrated on March 14. Can you guess how Pi Day is celebrated? You got it, by eating pie! Which automatically makes it one of our favorite holidays. What’s your favorite kind of pie?

Pi Day may be new to you, but you’ve probably heard of St. Patrick’s Day. March 17th is the Fest Day for St. Patrick, the Patron Saint of Ireland. What started as a religious holiday has changed quite a bit over the years, especially in the USA, and become a big celebration of all things Irish. Many communities hold a St. Patrick’s Day parade, and lots of people, whether they’re Irish or not, wear green and have parties and special meals. If you want to join in, just wear a green shirt and a big wide smile–and maybe try some Irish soda bread. It’s delicious!

Here’s a St. Patrick’s Day craft for you to try–one that would look perfect at school or at a St. Patrick’s Day parade: All you need is scissors and a paper plate (and, if your paper plate is white, maybe a Magic Marker or green crayon!) Photos are below to help you out.

Fold the plate in half.

Cut a hole for the head, leaving a “stem” of about three or four inches wide that is still attached to the plate.

With the plate still folded, draw a shamrock. Remember, you’re drawing only two leaves, because it’s folded!

Cut out the shamrock.

Unfold and stand up the shamrock. That’s it! Color if green if you like.

Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

And take a look at some of our St. Patrick’s Day themed (and green!) art.
